Drive is getting a lot of flack on the FP, and I think they main problem is people were not expecting what it turned out to be .... but its listed as a "crime drama".

Kinja'd!!!

Its a artsy film that can be descibed as neo-nior art house. That also got a 93% fresh rating on rotten tomatoes, and a lot of awards.

It just happens to also have cars in it, and clearly I'm on Oppo so I like it more because of this.

Ohh and Carey Mulligan

Kinja'd!!!

Not to mention I love this kind of music.

You have your opinions, but just remember if you don't like it, don't call it a bad movie. Its a great movie, just not in the way you like.

P.S. don't complain about fake exhaust, everything they used could of sounded like that with flowmasters on in it easily.

Great film, terrible marketing.

That being said, the terrible marketing is what got it the sales and recognition it wouldn't have ever gotten on its own.

It won awards and grossed 6 times what it cost to make ..... so the marketing worked.

My problem where the many seconds (minutes) of just pure silence. I get that some consider that "artistic", I considered it boring.

I enjoyed the chase with the Mustang though. And before her unfortunate "incident", Christina Hendricks!

The problem was the manner in which the film was marketed, little did I know practically all the action scenes in the movie were in the previews, indicating an action flick. This didn't bother me because cars and because I enjoy slower paced films as well. But I could see how others feel misled. The marketing department wanted to expand the reach of the movie by putting out an action packed preview. They didn't want to limit themselves to the target audience of a film like this. I bet if you speak with just the films intended audience this is regarded as a great film, but since the action flick viewing audience is a much larger group, the overall impression is that people dislike this movie.

Ditto for Place Beyond the Pines. Motorcycles! Ryan Gossling being a badass! Bank robberies! Yeah!

Oh wait... that only lasts for 15 minutes of the 14 hour move? After that it turns into some Gangs Of New York style disjointed malaise? Oh.

I don't even know how to respond to this because you said you liked it .... Yes some people clearly don't like it, but it exists and I appreciate it.

Just trying to shed some light, and be positive.

I loved the movie. It plays like a movie that was made years ago - it doesn't rely on graphics or even a lot of dialogue. It is slower paced and very deliberate, which many people who are accustomed to modern movies won't like.

Yes I do like the movie, but I am saying a majority of the audience was expecting an action movie due to the way the previews were done, this led to the majority of its audience NOT liking the movie as the action movie audience is much larger than the type of audience it should have been marketed to. It's understandable they went this way due to revenue. BUT again, this led to a lot of negative comments from what I would describe as a misled action film loving audience.

I am not sure where you were going with your response? I am being positive about the movie, it does however deserve criticism from that part of the audience that was misled into thinking it was action packed.

At the end of the day, when the previews become a distant memory, I think this will be a very well regarded film in many car and/or movie buffs movie collections.

I liked it.

The soundtrack was fitting and interesting.

The characters were good, and that is a real feat of acting, with such little dialogue.

The pace of most of the movie was a bit slow, but it was calming. I hate getting headaches from my eyes trying to focus on millisecond editing.

The pace also helped show context of real life, of people who aren't dicing it up every minute of every day. Who aren't constantly talking, and maybe spend a great deal of their time alone.

It had a sense of the real about it, even with the context of a criminal enterprise, that most people aren't normally involved in.

And I really liked the "A Real Hero" song. That song is actually about 'Sully' Sullenberger, the guy who landed the airliner on the hudson river, without any casualties. The video of the song has footage from the movie Drive, where the song gained popularity.

Great movie, haters notwithstanding.

Not a movie for philistines, though. They can go watch 2 Fast and 2 Furious if they're after gratuitous gear shifts and boost and the like.

They could have done a better opening chase scene with that Impala. I love movie chases using big american sedans that are undignified in the corners. Gimme a break I was raised in the 80's.

It's one of my favorite movies, but I can understand how other people might not like it. Especially considering the fact that the trailer made it seem like it would be more of an "action movie"

let me just say... Thank You. Thank you for this post, after reading this I sat down with some friends, summarized what you said and they all said "sounds good" and we started the movie. The only thing they weren't fond of was the level of gore lol - that part I wasn't expecting but it added a great contrast to the slightly awkward silence between two people who don't know how to talk... at all lol.

If I hadn't read what you posted I would have been expecting exactly what they advertised, not what it was actually about and been greatly disappointed and probably never finished it.

Well I'm glad this post got some one to watch it! The silence between characters can be a little off putting but I like it enough that it doesn't bother me.

But when he kicks that guys face in ......Biggest surprise of the movie.

I used to think this way, but I think she has grown into me. I was already a fan of burlesque and pin up stuff (and so is my fiancee). Also Dita reminds me of my lady.
I was never the porn/naked lady/sexy pictures looking type of guy, Hendricks and Dita are kind of the only exceptions for me. Although I couldn't resist BMW's Burlesque campaign:
